Recently, Fortnite gamers who were charged for an unwanted purchase while playing Fortnite could receive $126 million. For players who qualify for a refund under a $245 million settlement with Fortnite developer Epic Games over allegations the company used dishonest online tactics to deceive players, including unattended minors, into making unlawful purchases, the regulatory body is reopening the claims submission process.
In December 2022, the settlement was first made public. It was the highest refund the FTC had ever issued in a dispute involving the gambling sector at the time. At the time, the agency said that Epic had tricked players into buying in-game items they otherwise would not have.
The FTC announced on Wednesday that it will reimburse approximately 970,000 customers who submitted legitimate refund claims via cheques and PayPal on June 25 and June 26. According to the organisation, it made more than $22 million in its first batch of payments in December.
In a separate action last year, the FTC penalised Epic $275 million for allegedly violating the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act Rule.
How to apply for a Fortnite refund and get a portion of 126 million?
To find out if they qualify for compensation, Fortnite gamers may go to a special webpage. The FTC has now extended the time for consumers to submit a claim from February 14 to July 9. You don’t need to do anything further if you submitted a claim after February 14.
Customers are advised to cash cheques within ninety days after receiving them. The FTC states that PayPal refunds must be processed within 30 days.
Applying for a refund requires an Epic Account ID or claim number. For those under the age of 18, a parent or legal guardian must apply on their behalf.
